Undergraduate & Pre-service scholarships

Among the scholarships and prizes for which undergraduate candidates (and pre-service graduate students such as BTeach/MTeach candidates) in the faculty may be eligible are the following

Faculty and University Scholarships

Candidates may apply for one or more of the following scholarships and awards, if eligible under the conditions of the scholarship.

  • USyd Graduate Programs Merit and Entry Awards are awarded to those applicants with an exceptional academic record who are entering the graduate Bachelor of Teaching/Master of Teaching program. Merit Awards are valued at $6,000 per year for the duration of the degree and Entry Awards are valued at $6,000 for one year only. Applications are now open.   • The Master of Teaching Scholarships in Mathematics and Physics are available for graduates from the Faculty of Science at Sydney University with an exceptional academic record who are entering the graduate Bachelor of Teaching/Master of Teaching Secondary program in either Mathematics (Double method) or Science (Double method - specialising in Physics). The Awards are valued at $6,000pa for two years. Applications are now open. For more information see Graduate Entry Program Scholarships.
  • Master of Teaching Special Entry Awards are awarded to applicants with an exceptional academic record entering the graduate Bachelor of Teaching/Master of Teaching Secondary program in one of the areas of: Computer Studies, Commerce/Economics, Geography or Mathematics (Single method). The Special Entry Awards are valued at $2,000 for one year only. Applications are now open. For more information see Graduate Entry Program Scholarships.
  • Marion Macaulay Bequest Scholarships These scholarships are offered for undergraduate or postgraduate coursework students currently enrolled in the Faculty of Arts or the Faculty of Education and Social Work who will be travelling overseas for the purpose of either approved exchange to be credited towards their degree or an approved professional experience (e.g internship or practicum) to be credited towards their degree. The value of the scholarship is $7,500 regardless of the destination or duration of the period of travel ($5,000 for students already holding a scholarship of the same value).   • NSW Teachers Guild MTeach Internship Scholarship The NSW Teachers' Guild offers an annual $1000 scholarship for a student in the 2nd year of the MTeach undertaking the internship.
  • Shore Scholarships The Shore Scholarships are provided by Sydney Church of England Grammar School and offer a unique opportunity to work closely with this leading boys' day and boarding school. Three awards valued at $10,000 per annum are awarded to students of exceptional academic merit, who will contribute to the curricular and co-curricular life of the school (areas such as drama, debating, sport, music, and games etc.). The Shore Scholarships are available to undergraduate students in the senior years of the Bachelor of Education combined or single degrees.
  • Sydney Grammar School Teacher Education Scholarships These newly established scholarships are provided by Sydney Grammar School located in the heart of Sydney and offer final year Master of Teaching students the opportunity to participate in this leading secular Grammar School. Sydney Grammar, as an independent boys' school, offers a "liberal, humane, pre-vocational education" and has close historical ties with the University of Sydney. Three scholarships valued at $10,000 each are available with one dedicated to a Primary Master of Teaching student. Curriculum areas of particular interest to the school include English, Mathematics, Science, Music and Visual Arts at the secondary level and Science and Visual Arts at the Primary level.
  • University of Sydney Scholarships (Merit) and (Entry) are available to school leavers entering University. These scholarships are awarded on a combination of school examination results, University Admission Index (UAI) and other achievements such as leadership, creativity, self-motivation, and communication skills etc.).
  • Commonwealth Learning Scholarships available to new and continuing students to assist in learning and accommodation costs.

Scholarships and Prizes Celebration

The Faculty of Education and Social Work holds a Scholarships and Prizes Event each year in July to celebrate the awards and to recognise the valuable contribution made by donors and benefactors. It also provides an opportunity for the award recipients and benefactors to meet personally. We encourage participation in this event and there is an expectation that award recipients will make every effort to attend the event in the year of their award.

Prizes

The following prizes and scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic performance in the enrolled degree, discipline or subject area. Students do not apply for these awards - they are determined on the basis of the annual results in the course.

  • Colin Gladstone Harrison Family Scholarship for an Honours student in the final year of the Master of Teaching (Primary) course whose research is in the area of Primary Curriculum Development - $1000.
  • GS Caird Scholarship for proficiency in the second year Bachelor of Education course - up to $2,500.
  • GS Caird Scholarship for proficiency in the third year Bachelor of Education course - up to $2,500.
  • Social Work Pioneers Prize for the student with the highest aggregate marks in the third year of the Bachelor of Social Work degree - $1000.
  • John Cassim Creative Arts Award: Music is awarded to an Education student who excels in music pedagogy - $650.
  • Helen Sham-Ho Prize is awarded to a final year student enrolled in the Bachelor of Social Work or the BA/BSW with the highest aggregate mark for classroom performance together with an excellent performance in field education - $600.
  • Tuh Fuh and Ruby Lee Prize is awarded to the student who attains the highest grade for an undergraduate/pre-service final year unit of study related to research - $300.
  • Marie Wilkinson Prize is awarded to a student enrolled in the final two years of the Bachelor of Social Work course who has produced an excellent essay about children's welfare or children's rights - $250.
  • Newcombe Hodge Essay Prize for an outstanding essay in a unit of study in Education II or Education III - $360.
  • Headfort School Prize for proficiency in Education III - $350 or as determined by Faculty.

Other scholarships

Social Work students enrolled in either an undergraduate or graduate entry program allied health degree may be eligible to apply for a
Rural Allied Health Undergraduate Scholarship (RAHUS).

Students in a Primary or Secondary Teacher Education course (a BEd or BTeach/MTeach) may also be eligible to apply for a scholarship awarded by the following bodies:

  • NSW Department of Education and Training Teacher Education Scholarships
    HECS fees and $1500 scholarships in selected secondary teaching areas (such as Science, Mathematics, English and Technological & Applied Studies) and guaranteed offer of a permanent employment position within the DET in selected regions of the state.
  • NSW Teachers Federation Trainee Teacher Scholarships
    $2000 scholarships in various categories for trainee teachers, offered by the NSW Teachers Federation. Scholarships are offered annually and applications close in or around March each year.
  • Teachers Credit Union Scholarships
    The Teachers Credit Union offers 4 scholarships per year valued at $5,000 each to Future Teachers to cover study related expenses such as course fees or board and lodging. Applications are open from September to the end of January each year.
