Professional Experiences (Practicum - Teaching Practice)

School observation and practice teaching are major components of the practicum in all programs. As well, the practicum is an integral part of each program and is a cooperative effort between the schools to which Student Teachers have been allocated and the University.

The practicum component of professional experiences is designed to augment University course work and to provide student teachers with opportunities to develop their personal teaching skills and professional understandings.

Internship handbook for Master of Teaching/BEd Primary/BEd Combined Degrees

For more information about the professional experiences program in a particular degree:

BEd Primary

In the four year BEd (Primary) course, in which students prepare to teach across all the K-6 Key Learning Areas, the professional experiences program comprises:

  • Year 1 - attend one day per week for eight weeks during Semester 1
    - week beginning 19 March through to week beginning 21 May 2008
  • Year 2 - a 15 day block in Semester 2 ( Beginning Professional Experiences )
    - 27 October - 14 November 2008
  • Year 3 - a 20 day block in Semester 2 ( Professional Experiences 2)
    - 13 October - 7 November 2008
  • Year 4 - a 20 day block in Semester 1 ( Professional Experiences 3)
    - 2 June - 27 June 2008 (plus pre prac visit )
  • - a 30 day internship in Semester 2 ( Professional Experiences 4)
    - 13 October - 21 November 2008 on the same class as Term 2

BEd Secondary Combined Degrees: BEd/BA, BEd/BSc

In the five year BEd Secondary combined degree courses the professional experiences program comprises:

  • Year 3 - a 20 day block in Semester 2
    - 27 October - 21 November 2008
  • Year 4 - a 25 day block in Semester 1
    - 28 April - 30 May 2008
  • Year 5 - 29 day internship in Semester 1 (9 June 2008 public holiday)
    - 19 May - 27 June 2008
  • Year 5 ESL professional experience is a three week prac, 5 days per week for three weeks. For 2008 the dates are:
  • 17 March to 11 April 2008 (please note Easter holidays are from 21 March to 28 March 2008 which means that you have one week of prac, then the Easter break then recommence prac on 31 March 2008 for the final two weeks).

BEd Secondary Combined degrees: Psychology (Counselling)

In the five year BEd Secondary (Counselling) combined degrees the professional experiences program comprises:

  • Year 4 - 1 day per week totalling 11 days
    (Counselling Practicum 2 in Semester 1)
    - week beginning 12 March through to week beginning 4 June 2007
  • - a 10 day block in Semester 2 (Teaching Practicum 2)
    - 21 July - 1 August 2008
  • - 1 day per week totalling 10 days
    (Counselling Practicum in Semester 2)
    - week beginning 30 July through to week beginning 22 October
  • Year 5 - Counselling Prac Semester 1
    - Counselling prac Semester 2

BEd Secondary: Human Movement and Health Education

In the four year BEd Secondary (Human Movement and Health Education) degree the professional experiences program comprises:

  • Year 2 - a 25 day block in Semester 1 (School Experience I)
    - 2 June - 4 July 2008 (9 June 2008 public holiday)
    Please Note: students in non government schools will need to make up week 5 of practicum in the week beginning 21 July 2008
  • Year 3 - a 25 day block in Semester 1 (School Experience II)
    - 2 June - 4 July 2008 (9 June 2008 public holiday)

  • Year 4 - a 25 day block in Semester 1 (Professional Experiences in PDHPE 3)
    - 2 June - 4 July 2008 (9 June 2008 public holiday)

In the postgraduate Master of Teaching and Bachelor of Teaching degree the professional experiences program comprises:

  • Year 1 - a 25 day block in Semester 2 (Practicum 1)
    - 25 August - 26 September 2008
    Pre-prac Conference 10 June 2008
  • Year 2 - a 20 day block in Semester 1 (Practicum 2)
    - 28 April - 23 May 2008
  • Year 2 - a 9 week internship in Semester 2 (MTeach only)
    21 July - 19 September 2008
    Post Internship Conference
    25 - 26 September 2008
